Understanding Your Electric Bill with a Tesla

Learn how to read your electricity bill, find your true charging rate, and understand all the fees that affect your Tesla charging costs.

What You'll Learn

Your electric bill has multiple charges beyond the base rate. Understanding these fees helps you calculate your true Tesla charging cost and identify opportunities to save money.

Anatomy of Your Electric Bill

Most electric bills have 3-5 separate charges. Here's what each one means and how it affects your Tesla charging cost:

1. Energy Charge (Supply Charge)

What it is: The cost of the actual electricity you use, measured in $/kWh.

Typical range: $0.08-0.18/kWh

For Tesla charging: This is your main charging cost. Multiply this rate by kWh used.

Example:

Energy charge: $0.12/kWh × 300 kWh used = $36.00

2. Delivery Charge (Distribution)

What it is: Cost to deliver electricity through power lines to your home.

Typical range: $0.03-0.08/kWh

For Tesla charging: Adds 30-50% to your base rate. Often overlooked but significant.

Example:

Delivery: $0.05/kWh × 300 kWh = $15.00

3. Fixed Monthly Charges

What it is: Flat fee for being connected to the grid, regardless of usage.

Typical range: $8-25/month

For Tesla charging: Doesn't change with EV charging. Spread across all your electricity use.

4. Taxes and Fees

What it is: State/local taxes, renewable energy fees, regulatory charges.

Typical range: 5-15% of total bill

For Tesla charging: Adds to your effective rate. Calculate as percentage of energy + delivery.

How to Calculate Your True Charging Rate

Your "true" rate includes all charges, not just the energy rate. Here's how to find it:

Step-by-Step Calculation

Step 1: Find your total kWh used

Look for "Total kWh" or "Energy Usage" on your bill.

Example: 850 kWh

Step 2: Find your total charges

Add: Energy charges + Delivery charges + Taxes (exclude fixed fees)

Example: $102 + $42 + $14 = $158

Step 3: Divide to get true rate

Total charges ÷ Total kWh = True rate per kWh

Example: $158 ÷ 850 kWh = $0.186/kWh

Your true charging rate: $0.186/kWh

Use this rate in charging calculators for accurate cost estimates.

Real Electric Bill Example

Sample Bill Breakdown

Total kWh used this month:1,150 kWh

Energy Charges:

1,150 kWh × $0.11/kWh$126.50

Delivery Charges:

1,150 kWh × $0.045/kWh$51.75

Fixed Charges:

Customer charge$12.00

Taxes & Fees:

8% of subtotal$15.22
Total Bill:$205.47

True Rate Calculation:

($205.47 - $12.00 fixed) ÷ 1,150 kWh = $0.168/kWh

Common Bill Reading Mistakes

Only looking at the energy charge rate

Fix: Include delivery charges and taxes. Your true rate is 30-60% higher than the base energy rate.

Impact: Underestimating charging costs by $15-30/month

Not checking for Time-of-Use rates

Fix: Look for separate peak/off-peak rates on your bill. If you don't see them, call your utility to switch.

Impact: Missing potential savings of $40-80/month

Ignoring tier pricing

Fix: Some utilities charge more after you use a certain amount. Check if you're in a higher tier due to EV charging.

Impact: Paying 20-40% more per kWh in higher tiers

Not tracking month-to-month changes

Fix: Compare bills before and after getting your Tesla to see actual impact. Rates can change seasonally.

Impact: Unexpected bill increases without understanding why

How to Lower Your Electric Bill

Switch to an EV-specific rate plan

High

Many utilities offer special EV plans with super-low overnight rates. Can save $50-100/month.

Charge during off-peak hours only

High

Use Tesla's scheduled charging to only charge when rates are lowest (typically 11 PM - 7 AM).

Install solar panels

Very High

Generate your own electricity to offset charging costs. Payback period is typically 6-10 years.

Reduce phantom drain

Low

Disable Sentry Mode and Cabin Overheat Protection when parked at home to save 1-2 kWh/day.

Optimize other home electricity use

Medium

Run dishwasher, laundry, and pool pumps during off-peak hours to maximize TOU savings.
