How to Find Tesla Charging Stations

Complete guide to finding Superchargers, destination chargers, and public charging

50,000+ Charging Locations Worldwide

Finding a Tesla charging station is easier than finding a gas station. With over 50,000 Superchargers globally and hundreds of thousands of destination chargers and public stations, you're never far from a charge. This guide shows you how to find them all.

Types of Charging Stations

Tesla Superchargers

Fast DC charging, 20-40 minutes for 10-80%

Tesla Destination Chargers

Level 2 charging at hotels/restaurants, 4-8 hours

Public Level 2 Chargers

J1772 stations (use included adapter), 4-8 hours

Third-Party DC Fast Chargers

CCS stations (requires adapter), 30-60 minutes

Method 1: Use Tesla Navigation (Best Option)

The Tesla navigation system is the easiest and most accurate way to find charging stations. It shows real-time availability and automatically plans charging stops for road trips.

How to Find Chargers in Your Car:

  1. 1.Tap the lightning bolt icon on the map
  2. 2.Red pins = Superchargers, Blue pins = Destination chargers
  3. 3.Tap any pin to see details: available stalls, charging speed, amenities
  4. 4.Tap "Navigate" to get directions

Pro Tip: When you navigate to a Supercharger, the car automatically preconditions the battery for faster charging.

Method 2: Use the Tesla App

The Tesla app shows all charging locations and lets you plan trips before you get in the car.

How to Find Chargers in the App:

  1. 1.Open the Tesla app on your phone
  2. 2.Tap "Location" at the bottom
  3. 3.Tap the filter icon to show Superchargers, Destination chargers, or both
  4. 4.Tap any location to see details and get directions

Method 3: Tesla Website

Visit tesla.com/findus to see all Supercharger and Destination charger locations on a map. This is useful for planning trips in advance.

Website Features:

  • Filter by Superchargers or Destination chargers
  • See amenities at each location (restrooms, food, WiFi)
  • View charging speeds and number of stalls
  • Plan multi-stop road trips

Finding Third-Party Charging Stations

You can also use non-Tesla charging stations with the right adapters. Popular networks include ChargePoint, EVgo, and Electrify America.

PlugShare (Recommended)

Free app showing all charging stations from all networks. Filter by connector type (J1772, CCS) and see real-time availability and user reviews.

Download: iOS and Android

ChargePoint

Large network of Level 2 chargers. Create an account to start charging sessions and pay through the app.

Requires: J1772 adapter (included with Tesla)

Electrify America

DC fast charging network. Requires CCS adapter ($250 from Tesla) for fast charging speeds.

Requires: CCS adapter (sold separately)

Understanding Supercharger Availability

Superchargers show real-time availability in the car and app. Here's how to read the indicators:

Gray: Many stalls available (5+ open)
Yellow: Some stalls available (2-4 open)
Red: Busy or full (0-1 open)
Light Gray: Temporarily unavailable

Tips for Finding Charging on Road Trips

  • Always use Tesla navigation: It plans the most efficient route with optimal charging stops.
  • Check availability before leaving: If a Supercharger is red (busy), the car will suggest alternatives.
  • Look for amenities: Choose Superchargers near restaurants or shopping for productive charging time.
  • Have a backup plan: Know the next Supercharger in case your planned stop is full.
  • Destination chargers for overnight: Hotels with destination chargers let you charge while you sleep.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using third-party navigation

Google Maps won't precondition your battery or show real-time Supercharger availability.

Arriving at 5% battery

Aim for 10-20% arrival to avoid range anxiety and have a buffer.

Not checking amenities

Some Superchargers are in remote areas with no facilities nearby.

Forgetting adapters

Keep your J1772 adapter in the car for public Level 2 charging.
