Your Tesla Comes with Industry-Leading Protection
Tesla provides comprehensive warranty coverage that protects your investment. Understanding what's covered helps you maintain your vehicle properly and know when to seek warranty service versus paying out of pocket.
Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty
Coverage Period
4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty covers most vehicle components and manufacturing defects from the date of delivery.

- • Touchscreen and main control systems
- • HVAC components (heating, ventilation, air conditioning)
- • Suspension and steering parts
- • Door handles, power windows, and mirrors
- • Interior trim and materials

Battery and Drive Unit Warranty
All Tesla models include an 8-year battery and drive unit warranty with minimum 70% battery capacity retention. Coverage varies by model and configuration.

Model 3/Y RWD

Model 3/Y LR & Performance
8 years

Important: Tesla will only replace the battery if capacity drops below 70% during the warranty period. Normal degradation above 70% is not covered.
What's Not Covered
Routine Maintenance
Tire rotation, brake service, fluid changes, and cabin air filter replacements are owner responsibilities and not covered by warranty.
Cosmetic Damage
Paint fading, scratches, dents, upholstery wear, and other cosmetic issues are excluded from warranty coverage.
Accident or Abuse Damage
Damage from collisions, misuse, neglect, or unauthorized modifications voids warranty coverage for affected components.
Aftermarket Modifications
Installing non-Tesla parts or making unauthorized modifications may void warranty coverage on related systems.
Real-World Warranty Scenario
Sarah's Model Y touchscreen issue: After 2 years and 35,000 miles, Sarah's touchscreen became unresponsive. She scheduled service through the Tesla app.
Tesla diagnosed a hardware failure covered under the Basic Vehicle Warranty. The touchscreen was replaced at no cost, including labor. Total value: $1,200 saved.
If this had occurred after 4 years or 50,000 miles, Sarah would have paid out of pocket or used Extended Service Agreement coverage if purchased.
Warranty Transfer for Used Teslas
Tesla warranties are transferable when ownership is properly transferred through Tesla. This adds significant value to used Tesla purchases.
Remaining Basic Warranty: New owner receives whatever time/mileage remains on the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty
Used Vehicle Warranty: After basic warranty expires, Tesla adds 1 year or 10,000 miles of coverage
Battery Warranty: Full 8-year battery and drive unit warranty transfers with the vehicle
